Gottfried Helnwein (born October 8, 1948 in Vienna) is an Austrian fine artist, photographer, and performance artist.

Helnwein studied at the University of Visual Art in Vienna (Akademie der Bildenden Künste, Wien). He was awarded the Master-class prize (Meisterschulpreis) of the University of Visual Art, Vienna, the Kardinal-König prize and the Theodor-Körner prize. His early work consists mainly of hyper-realistic watercolors, depicting wounded children, as well as performances - often with children - in public spaces. Helnwein is a conceptual artist, concerned primarily with psychological and sociological anxiety, historical issues and political topics. As a result of this, his work is often considered provocative and controversial. He has worked as a painter, draftsman, photographer, muralist, sculptor and performance artist, using a wide variety of techniques and media. Helnwein is also known for his stage and costume designs of theater, ballet and opera productions. amongst them Staatsoper Hamburg, Volksbühne Berlin and Los Angeles Opera. ...

Rejoignant les aspirations d'artistes tels que Arnulf Rainer, autres Aktionnistes Viennois, jusqu'à Gottfried Helnwein, mais aussi Antonin Artaud, etc ... je cherche à retrouver l'identité archaïque de l'humain à-travers sa tragédie de la mort et de la naissance, ses processus de transformations dans la vie. Which artists have inspired you?
All good artists. There are so many, from different artistic aspects, presentations to concepts. I can say from the renaissance masters to cartoonists. Also, conceptual artists, painters, and contemporary sculptors. Just to name a few references: Klimt, Egon Shiele, Tapiés, Warhol, GOTTFRIED HELNWEIN, Kent Williams, Mattew Currin, Kozik, Matthew Barney, Nicolas de Crécy; Derek Hess, Joao Abel Manta, and more.
Music is also important to me. It’s my main source of inspiration while I work. And movies, graphic and multimedia design...and let’s not forget magazine ads, comics... ...

Gefahr erkannt - Gefahr gebannt. Rammstein machen mit ihrem zweiten Album nämlich nicht einfach nur wieder "Buh", sondern variieren ihre Provokation, so dass sie auch diesmal ein großes Echo hervorrufen dürften und nicht zu ihrer eigenen Farce verkommen. Neben noch derberen Texten trägt dazu u. a. auch eine Fotoserie des österreichischen Künstlers Gottfried Helnwein bei, der u.a. das legendäre "Blackout"-Cover der Scorpions kreierte.
"Ein Freund von ihm, dem wir gut gefallen, machte ihn auf uns aufmerksam. Daraufhin bot er spontan seine Zusammenarbeit an. Diese Gelegenheit ließen wir uns natürlich nicht entgehen und fuhren auf sein Schloß, wo er drei verschiedene Portrait-Fotoserien schoß: eine mit Farbe, eine mit Blut und eine mit Besteck im Gesicht. Wir funkten gleich auf einer Wellenlänge, und die Bilder gefallen uns ausgesprochen gut, weshalb wir sie sowohl für das SEHN-SUCHT-Booklet als auch für die Tourplakate verwenden werden. Das Booklet lässt sich dank einer speziellen Anordnung übrigens so falten, dass jeder sein persönliches Lieblingsmotiv zum Frontcover machen kann, und von den insgesamt sechs Tourplakaten wollen wir in jeder Stadt ein anderes Motiv aufhängen." ...

Helnwein is combining large scale paintings into installations, and photographic series with paintings, which almost become film-like when viewed together.
I view his work (as a whole) as extremely modern, even 'cutting edge'. Yet, he works in acrylics and oils, primarily.
This is photorealism, and of a very high degree. (Yet the work is not about technique at all. It is about concept--this is conceptual art, as I believe it can and should be.)
